South Sydney Great Nathan Merritt Fighting for His LifeNathan Merritt
Nathan Merritt, one of South Sydney's greatest and most popular players, is fighting for his life after being hospitalized on Friday afternoon. Merritt was found unresponsive and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown, where he is currently on life support. His condition is listed as serious.
Merritt, 40, scored 146 tries in 218 matches for South Sydney from 2002 to 2014. He is the club's all-time leading try scorer and is ranked 12th all-time in NRL history. Merritt also represented City Origin, the Indigenous All Stars, and New South Wales.
Merritt has remained active since his retirement from the NRL, playing in last week's Koori Knockout tournament. He is also a passionate advocate for Indigenous youth and established the Nathan Merritt Foundation in 2015 to provide guidance and support.
The NRL community is rallying around Merritt and his family during this difficult time. Rabbitohs legend Greg Inglis said, "Nathan is a champion bloke and a true champion of the game. He's an inspiration to us all. Our thoughts are with him and his family at this time."
Merritt's Legacy
Merritt is more than just a great rugby league player. He is also a role model for Indigenous youth and a passionate advocate for social justice. He has used his platform to speak out against racism and discrimination and to promote education and opportunity for Indigenous Australians.
Merritt's story is one of resilience and determination. He overcame a difficult upbringing to become one of the most successful rugby league players of all time. He is an inspiration to us all and we hope that he makes a full recovery.
As a rugby league fan, I have always admired Nathan Merritt. He is a brilliant player and a great ambassador for the game. I am saddened to hear about his illness and I wish him and his family all the best during this difficult time.
I hope that Merritt's story will inspire others to never give up on their dreams, no matter what challenges they face. He is a true champion and I am grateful for the contribution he has made to rugby league and to the Indigenous community.
